Brief: Working in pairs, you will create a range of decorative objects for the home exploring your individual design philosophies and blending these together to form a range of decorative, domestic products.
Think about the design philosophy of your newly formed design duo and the designers that you are both inspired by. Design a visual language for your range, and think about who it’s for, where it may be located, and why it exists. Think about small collections of designed homeware. For example, desk accessories, vases, bowls, plant pots and other objects that intrigue you as a duo. The objects you choose to design don’t have to have a specific function but should be inspired by a combination of your design values.
Combining Japanese with the minimalistic design movement helped us form our 'ZEN' arrangement. Our product range included a mug, plant pot and desk lamp that made up a trendy worktop arrangement.
The first product was the mug, which resembles Japanese text through the unique handle. Our desktop lamp follows similar traditional form of 'Torii arches' and includes a rising sun pattern on its centre, which generates both mood lighting and a stronger light source on the top section. The final product from the desk arrangement is the plant pot. This features a style inspired by 'pagoda buildings' seen in Japan.
We decided early on that all the products correlate with one another not only through the arrangement but when placed together form the word 'Zen' in Japanese through the unique forms on each product.
