Grey Foam Modelling

Brief: Strip apart a toaster then re-model and design out of grey foam as accurately as possible.

As this was the first time I had used grey foam in designing a product, there was a lot of trial and error. As it had to be of scale to that of the real toaster, I began by making a large foam block. There were different tools and heat carvers that I could use to shave off the rough edges and after a while I began to feel more confident when using them.

Orthographic drawing is something I both enjoy and have an acquired skill for when sketching physically. This exploded view accurately depicts the different parts to the toaster. The sketch helped with the understanding of where some parts were to be placed in regard to the foam model.

I was happy with my final prototype as it was near enough to scale. I did however, struggle to show the curve that was seen on the real toaster whereas the foam model has the flat walls. Overall, It was a good effort and provided me with the needed confidence for future projects in foam prototyping.
